At The Wheelhouse Studio, our well trained team supports students of all skill levels.
Whether you're just starting out or looking to develop higher-level techniques, we offer beginner and intermediate classes, as well as advanced classes for more experienced potters. You’ll work at your own pace with guidance from our experienced educators.
The Wheelhouse provides everything you need for your classes; including tools, clay, glazing, and firing.

THE WHEEL
A well known way to make ceramics, wheel throwing involves shaping clay on the potter’s wheel. Our wheel classes cover the fundamentals for beginners, while allowing continuing students to further their mastery of clay, form, construction, and surface techniques.
Our friendly educators guide and inspire you, providing both instruction and support.
For students over the age of 16 years.

HAND-BUILDING
Explore the ancient art of hand-building ceramics through techniques like coiling, slab-building, pinch pots, and surface treatment. This relaxing method allows for the creation of unique forms and differs greatly to creating on the wheel.
Our friendly educators guide you through the process of making your own vessels, functional tableware, and sculptural pieces.
For students over the age of 16 years.

GLAZING
Glazing is an integral part of the ceramics process, adding both beauty and functionality to complete your creations.
As part of our Wheel & Hand-building term classes, you will learn to glaze your workpieces. Our new Glaze Application & Technique term classes offer a multitude of different methods & approaches.
For single classes, with the exception of our Glaze & Graze sessions, The Wheelhouse will glaze pieces on behalf of students.

Taste of Clay | The Wheel
This two hour class is a great way to test the water if you are thinking of learning pottery. A taste into what you can create on the potter’s wheel and how you can expect to grow as a potter.
You'll learn how to center and throw clay on the wheel in groups of up to 12 people. At the end of the class you pick one item that you have made and we will have that trimmed, glazed and fired for you to collect 4 weeks later. This is a great intro to ceramics and we guarantee you will have fun!
It’s an interactive way to meet new people - book yourself in or bring a friend as well. Classes run regularly all year ‘round.

You will be introduced to clay and learn the basics of hand-building in groups of up to 12 people. At the end of the class you pick one item that you have made and we will have that glazed and fired for you to collect 4 weeks later. This is a fun intro to ceramics and enjoyment is guaranteed!
It’s a great way to meet new people - book yourself in or bring a friend as well. Classes run regularly all year ‘round.

Date Night | The Wheel
Looking for a fun and creative night out? Join us for Date Night Pottery! Whether you're coming with a partner, bestie, sibling, or a parent, this class promises a fantastic experience for all.
During the class, you will learn the art of creating on the wheel. You'll work on making your clay masterpieces while enjoying awesome company & some fun tunes by candlelight!
This is a great opportunity to laugh and chat while engaging in a hands-on activity. By the end of the night, our teachers will help finalise your work, which will then later be glazed, fired, and ready for you to collect.
Includes a selection of food & beverage on arrival (incl a complimentary glass of sparkling wine or similar). Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

Glaze & Graze
FOR PRIVATE GROUPS & CORPORATE BOOKINGS
Experience our fun and social two-hour Graze & Glaze class, focusing solely on glazing pre-made pieces. Perfect for those who want to enjoy the creative process without the initial clay shaping, these sessions allow you to experiment with glazing combinations and techniques.
Choose from our selection of large, medium, or small pieces to personalise with your unique touch. You will have access to our 6 Wheelhouse Studio Underglazes in primary colours, allowing for endless colour mixing to suit your individual taste. Our educators will guide you through the glazing and firing process. Students will be able to collect their pieces 4 weeks after their class.
The session includes a grazing selection of food and beverages, along with a complimentary glass of wine or sparkling. Please let us know if you have any dietary requirements.

Special Workshops
Our specialised and unique ceramic workshops are one off events or limited series classes. Prices vary per event.
The Wheelhouse has previously had special guest potters, such as renowned artist David Ray and talented sculptor Lucy Randall. During these classes, our guest educator talks about their experience and teaches their unique way of creating with clay.
We also run a number of Intensive Wheel Workout classes throughout the year for intermediate and advanced potters. This 3 hour class is geared towards individuals who are looking to refine their skills. We do have a prerequisite of students having attended at least one of our 8 week terms, or equivalent.
Our latest event saw Ted Secombe visit us at The Wheelhouse for an exclusive 4 hour workshop. It was an exceptionally well informed session and guidance on The Wheel by one of Australia’s highest profile ceramicists.

You'll learn how to center and throw clay on the wheel, shaping it into various forms such as bowls, mugs, and vases. As you progress, you will master the art of trimming your work to achieve clean lines, as well as cover essential techniques in construction, surface decoration, and glazing.

Our classes teach you how to create a variety of forms by hand-building. You will explore various surface treatments and decorative techniques, such as carving, stamping, and adding textures. Classes include glazing sessions, where you'll learn how to apply glazes to enhance the appearance and durability of your pieces.

Glaze Application Technique | Term
Explore the art of glaze application in our engaging Glaze Applications & Techniques class. This two-hour weekly course, spanning 4 weeks, allows you to create your own test tiles and experiment with a range of glazing methods, including bubbles, underglaze painting, sgraffito, colored slip, sponging, and more.

Sculpting 4 Week Term
Have you been dreaming of a clay project you’re not quite
sure how to execute?In this sculpture class techniques for building all kinds of objects will be explored. Kelsey has made sculptures ranging from birds to buildings to imaginary fossils.
This class will go beyond handbuilding techniques used for tableware and into nontraditional methods for building complex forms. There are many ways to construct with clay. Some methods covered in the class include building solid, internal structural supports, and leather-hard slab building for crisp corners.
Come with an idea and Kelsey will guide you towards the best method suited to your creation. You will gain the knowledge you need to complete it and will go forward with the skills to build any other future projects you dream up!

Our Times

We are closed from December 23 2024 and re-open January 6, 2025.
To avoid disruption to running classes and to make sure someone is available to assist you, collection must be made during the below times only.
Monday/Tuesday: 10am - 3pm (please call prior to ensure someone is in attendance)
Saturday: 11am - 2pm (excluding Dec 21 - Jan 10)
All work is ready to collect 4 weeks from completion and work is only stored for 2 months from the date of your last class.
